Jeremiah 10:5 · World English Bible

Jeremiah 10:5 Meaning They Are Like a Palm Tree

They are like a palm tree, of turned work, and don’t speak. They must be carried, because they can’t move. Don’t be afraid of them; for they can’t do evil, neither is it in them to do good.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

A carved idol stands stiff and impressive, and it is completely dead. It cannot take a single step. It has to be lifted and carried wherever it goes, a thing that looks like power and holds none.

The mind builds these same figures out of thought. A fear, a grievance, an image of some enemy grows tall and rigid and demanding, and a person bows before it as if it were alive. Seen clearly, it can do nothing on its own. It moves only when attention picks it up and carries it. When a person stops feeding it, the fear that seemed so solid is revealed as wood that must be propped upright, and its power drains away.

Live Jeremiah 10:5 today

  1. Name the worry that has been standing over you this week, then ask what it has actually done today besides be thought about. Sit with it a minute without arguing and without feeding it.
  2. If there is a grievance you keep rehearsing about someone, catch yourself the next time the speech starts in your head and put it down mid sentence. You can set it down as often as it comes back.
  3. When a dreaded message, call or meeting is coming, feel how big it has grown while you were waiting. Walk into it and see the plain size of the real thing.

What fear have you been carrying that cannot move unless you pick it up?

All that we are arises with our thoughts. With our thoughts we make the world, and the suffering we fear is built with the same hands.

The rope on the dark path looks exactly like a snake until the light comes, and then it is only rope. Nothing about the rope changed, and all of the terror was yours.

Stoicism · Epictetus

People are not disturbed by things but by the view they take of them. The event has no power to upset you, and your opinion about it has all the power you give it.
