Ego v. Being

'Humble yourselves, sit down.' Every crown the mind builds for itself eventually comes down. The elevated self-image, the sense of standing above others, the whole structure of position and glory: all of it is form, and all form passes.

To sit down is to let the ego step off its throne willingly, before life takes the crown anyway. This is not humiliation but relief. The elevated self-image was a heavy thing to defend, always afraid of its own fall. When you set it down and rest in simple presence, you are no longer spending your life protecting a position, and the peace you find no longer depends on standing above anyone.

SUFISM

Sufism

The order goes to the two people with the most reason to feel tall, and it names their sickness by naming what slips: the glory they wore had become the glory they thought they were. A crown looks like the self, but it was only borrowed light on the head.

The cure is smaller than a throne room. Sit down, and let the shining thing go before it is torn away. What stays when the gold is gone is the one who lent it, always closer than the crown.

Live Jeremiah 13:18 today

  1. Do one plain, unglamorous task today with your full attention, the dishes, the laundry, the inbox nobody thanks you for. Let it be simply what you are doing and not beneath you.
  2. Admit to one person that you were wrong about something or do not know the answer. Say it without the softening explanation afterward.
  3. In a meeting or a group chat, let someone else have the last word, the credit or the better idea. Feel the pull to reassert yourself and sit down inside instead.

What are you tired of defending?
