Jeremiah 15:16 · World English Bible

Jeremiah 15:16 Meaning Your Words Were Found

Your words were found, and I ate them. Your words were to me a joy and the rejoicing of my heart, for I am called by your name, Yahweh, God of Armies.

What does Jeremiah 15:16 mean?

To find words of truth and merely think about them changes nothing. To eat them, to take them so deeply inward that they become part of your Being, is to be nourished where the mind cannot reach.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

To find words of truth and merely think about them changes nothing. To eat them, to take them so deeply inward that they become part of your Being, is to be nourished where the mind cannot reach.

This is why joy arose: not the pleasure of getting what you want, which always fades, but the quiet gladness that rises from within when you are no longer identified with your thoughts. To be called by that name is to know your true identity, which was never the small self of your thoughts but the awareness quietly present beneath them.

MANIFESTATION

Manifestation

To eat a word is to take an idea so far in that it stops being something read and becomes something a person is. Merely knowing a promise leaves it outside, on the page. Swallowing it means feeling the wish already granted until that feeling is your own flesh. Then the word is no longer information. It is the joy of a thing possessed.

A meal disappears into the body and comes out as strength and warmth, no longer separate from the one who ate. An accepted assumption vanishes the same way into a person and reappears as his mood, his bearing, his outer luck. Being called by the name of the Lord of hosts is knowing the imagination as the only maker of circumstance. A word taken inward and felt as done becomes the life a person lives.

SUFISM

Sufism

Words are eaten, not merely heard. Much religious talk stays on the lips as a performance for onlookers, and a heart that only recites has swallowed nothing. The cure is to take one true saying inward and live on it in private until it becomes the body's own strength.

The joy comes because he now carries the Name. A cup takes the color of whatever fills it, and a heart filled with these words takes on their light and belongs to their Speaker. What was found outside has become the very taste of who he is.

AWARENESS

Indian Guru

Eating is the difference. Words heard and stored become a load, and the man carrying the most scripture is often the emptiest, since nothing has entered his blood. Something has to be chewed until the sentence disappears and the one who swallowed it is not the same.

Delight is the test. Collected information feels like weight and makes a person argumentative, ready to defend a position he has never verified. Digested truth makes him lighter, and the joy has no cause outside him to point to. Bearing the name comes after the eating, never from the reciting.

Live Jeremiah 15:16 today

  1. Take one line from what you read today and carry it with you instead of reading more. Let it come back to you in the quiet gaps, waiting for coffee, standing in line, and see what it does.
  2. Tell one person, in your own plain words, about something that moved you. Saying it out loud takes it further in than thinking about it ever does.
  3. When you are stretched thin and want to react, pause long enough to feel what you actually believe underneath the pressure. Let it move your next sentence rather than your mood.

What truth do you know about and still have not let all the way in?

A description of water will not wet your mouth. The teaching has to be swallowed, lived in the body, before it feeds anyone.

Hinduism · the Upanishads

Hearing the teaching is only the first step. It has to be turned over in thought and then absorbed until it is no longer something you know but something you are.

Sufism · Rumi

The bread must be chewed to become you. Truth held at arm's length stays bread on the table, and the joy comes only when it has entered your blood.
