Jeremiah 2:31 · World English Bible

Jeremiah 2:31 Meaning Generation

Generation, consider Yahweh’s word. Have I been a wilderness to Israel? Or a land of thick darkness? Why do my people say, ‘We have broken loose. We will come to you no more?’

What does Jeremiah 2:31 mean?

Hear how the ego announces its independence: we are lords, we need nothing beyond ourselves. This is the voice of the self that has forgotten its source, convinced that it is complete on its own and that the life within it belongs to it alone.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

Hear how the ego announces its independence: we are lords, we need nothing beyond ourselves. This is the voice of the self that has forgotten its source, convinced that it is complete on its own and that the life within it belongs to it alone.

Yet the presence you turn away from was never a barren wilderness to you. It has always been the ground of your being, the stillness from which everything you are arises. The emptiness you feel does not come from that presence failing you. It comes from the mind's proud insistence that it can live cut off from the very source that gives it life.

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

Clinical Psychology

A generation declares itself sovereign and walks away from the source that sustained it. The complaint hidden underneath is that the highest good felt like a desert, that faithfulness offered nothing worth returning for. That is the resentful heart speaking, not the honest one.

Nothing that fed you was ever the barren land you now accuse it of being. The wilderness was in the wanting, not in what you left. When a man crowns himself lord over his own life and severs every tie above him, he does not become free. He becomes lost, and calls the losing independence.

Live Jeremiah 2:31 today

  1. Admit to yourself today, honestly, one thing you did not do on your own. Say who or what carried the part you took credit for.
  2. Ask for the help you have been too proud to ask for, in an actual message you send today. The person on the other end will almost certainly be glad you did.
  3. When the pressure hits and your instinct is to handle it all alone, pause and feel the strain in that. Something is holding you up already, and gripping harder does not add to it.

What have you been calling strength that is really just refusing to lean on anything?

Tao Te Ching 22

Those who make themselves the center shrink, and those who do not need to be first are whole. Self-sufficiency is a smaller life pretending to be a bigger one.

Bhagavad Gita 3

The person who imagines, I am the doer of all this, is misreading what is actually happening. Life moves and the ego takes credit for the movement.

Zen

The wave is proud of its height and forgets it is water. Nothing is lost when it remembers, the ocean was never its enemy.
