Jeremiah 2:4 Meaning Hear Yahweh’s Word

Hear Yahweh’s word, O house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Israel!

What does Jeremiah 2:4 mean?

The word carries the LORD's authority, so dismissing the messenger does nothing to the one speaking. One Hebrew word covers hearing and obeying, and a hearing that leaves a life unchanged was never hearing at all.

The word carries the LORD's authority, so dismissing the messenger does nothing to the one speaking. One Hebrew word covers hearing and obeying, and a hearing that leaves a life unchanged was never hearing at all. God summons the people He bound Himself to the way a wronged party summons the other side in court, and the demand to listen opens it.

This people carries both names at once, the birth name and the one God gave. The summons reaches every family, the clan under the tribe, so no household is covered by whatever its leaders do with the word.

Live Jeremiah 2:4 today

  1. Think of one thing you already know you should do, the message you keep rereading, the appointment you keep not making. Do that one thing today instead of learning more about it.
  2. When someone you love tells you something plainly, repeat it back to them in your own words before you answer. You will find out fast whether you were listening or just waiting.
  3. In the meeting where you already know the right call and it will cost you something to say it, say it anyway. Agreeing quietly is not the same as hearing.

What have I been told clearly, more than once, that my life has not changed to match?
