Jeremiah 2:6 · World English Bible

Jeremiah 2:6 Meaning They Didn’t Say

They didn’t say, ‘Where is Yahweh who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, who led us through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and of pits, through a land of drought and of the shadow of death, through a land that no one passed through, and where no man lived?’

What does Jeremiah 2:6 mean?

A people stops finding God the moment it stops asking where he is, and the drift feels like nothing at all. An unasked question produces no search, no search produces no finding, and a generation that finds nothing concludes there was never anything there.

A people stops finding God the moment it stops asking where he is, and the drift feels like nothing at all.

An unasked question produces no search, no search produces no finding, and a generation that finds nothing concludes there was never anything there. That conclusion is not reached by argument. It is reached by silence, one question never asked, then a thousand, until deliverance through country that kills whatever enters it stops counting as evidence for anything.

Gratitude is a search before it is a feeling. Asking where the God who did that has gone sends a mind back through the desert years, and it returns with someone who acts, and that finding sets the state a person worships from. Without the asking, a rescue stays a story about the past and does no work in the present.

Live Jeremiah 2:6 today

  1. On your commute, with the phone away, run back over one hard stretch you came through and ask who or what carried you. The answers show up when the question does.
  2. Tell one person what they got you through, specifically, not generally. Most people never hear it and it changes the room.
  3. When today's thing goes wrong and the old doubt says nothing has ever worked out, make yourself name three times it did. Not to feel better, just to be accurate.

What rescue have I stopped asking about, and so stopped seeing?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

He opens the Meditations by naming, person by person, what each one gave him. Gratitude was a deliberate search through the record, not a mood he waited for.

Judaism · daily blessings

The tradition fixes a hundred blessings through an ordinary day, precisely so that mercy does not go unremarked just because it became routine.

Hinduism · Bhagavad Gita 4

As a person approaches, so the divine meets them. The one who stops turning toward it reports an empty sky and calls that evidence.
