Jeremiah 23:9 Meaning Concerning the Prophets

Concerning the prophets: My heart within me is broken. All my bones shake. I am like a drunken man, and like a man whom wine has overcome, because of Yahweh, and because of his holy words.

What does Jeremiah 23:9 mean?

There are moments when something greater than the thinking mind breaks through, and the whole body registers it. The heart breaks open, the bones tremble, and you stagger like one overcome by wine.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

There are moments when something greater than the thinking mind breaks through, and the whole body registers it. The heart breaks open, the bones tremble, and you stagger like one overcome by wine. This is not weakness but the small self meeting a reality far larger than itself.

The ego cannot contain such an encounter, so the form shakes as the old identity loosens its grip. What looks like being undone is simply presence flooding in faster than the mind can manage. You tremble because something real has touched you more deeply than any thought ever could.

  1. When a song, a view out the train window, or your kid asleep hits you harder than makes sense, let your eyes fill. Do not reach for your phone to cut the feeling short.
  2. If someone near you is shaking from something big, good or terrible, stay beside them without words. Your calm presence gives their body room to go through it.
  3. In a tense moment when your hands are unsteady or your chest is tight, let it be there while you keep going. You do not have to be composed to be present.

When something real breaks through, do you let it move you, or do you quickly get a grip?

Sufism · Rumi

The lover is drunk without wine, broken open by something no cup could hold. What looks like coming apart is the shell cracking.

Upanishads · Kena

Faced with that from which speech and mind themselves arise, the words stop. The one who claims to grasp it has not met it.

Zen

When the old sense of self gives way, people have been known to weep or laugh without reason. The body knows before the mind can explain.
