Ego v. Being

To turn from your evil way is not mainly about morality. It is about waking from the unconscious patterns that run your life, the reactions and resentments the mind repeats without your ever choosing them. Each one carries you out of the present and into a story of grievance.

The land given to you forever is not a place on a map. It is the present moment, the only ground you can ever stand on. When you turn from the old compulsions and return to this moment, you come home, because the present is the only place where life actually happens.

Live Jeremiah 25:5 today

  1. Find the one grievance your mind returns to in idle moments, in the shower, at a red light. When it starts up today, let it go mid-sentence and come back to where you actually are.
  2. With the family member who always sets you off, skip your usual line this once. Same comment from them, different move from you, and the old loop has nowhere to go.
  3. When a message or email flips you into defending yourself, put the phone down and wait an hour. Reply from this moment, not from the story that built up in the first ten seconds.

Which old reaction have you been treating as just who you are?

Buddhism

The same reaction, repeated, wears a deeper groove. Freedom begins the moment you see the groove instead of running down it again.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

You can step out of this at any moment and return to yourself. The present is always open, however long you were away.

Tao Te Ching 64

The journey of a thousand miles begins under your feet. Not somewhere ahead, but exactly where you are standing.
