Jeremiah 29:13 Meaning You Shall Seek Me

You shall seek me, and find me, when you search for me with all your heart.

What does Jeremiah 29:13 mean?

Half-hearted seeking finds nothing, and that is mercy, not cruelty. The heart that keeps one hand on its old comforts is really looking for a smaller thing, and the smaller thing is all it gets.

SUFISM

Sufism

Half-hearted seeking finds nothing, and that is mercy, not cruelty. The heart that keeps one hand on its old comforts is really looking for a smaller thing, and the smaller thing is all it gets. The disease is a divided wanting; the cure is to gather the whole self into one longing and pour it in a single direction.

This is spoken as a promise, and the promise holds. To the one who searches with everything, the One being searched for is already the searcher's own deepest pull, the treasure that set the digging in motion before the shovel ever moved.

AWARENESS

Indian Guru

Wholeness is the only condition. A person searching with half of himself is really two people, one moving toward and one keeping the return ticket in his pocket, and that search can continue for a lifetime without touching anything.

Totality changes the arithmetic. When every part of someone pours in one direction, the seeker is used up in the seeking, and nobody remains standing apart, waiting to be handed a result. What was being looked for shows itself then as the ground under the whole restless movement, not as something waiting further along the road.

  1. Before you reach for the phone this morning, ask yourself what you actually want from the day, and write the real answer, not the respectable one.
  2. Ask someone close to you what they think you are really chasing. Then stay quiet long enough to hear the whole answer.
  3. In the next twenty minutes of work, close the other tabs and give it one direction. The relief you feel is the same relief a gathered heart feels.

If I got exactly what I have been half looking for, would it be enough?

Buddhism

The story goes that the Buddha sat under the tree and refused to get up until he had woken all the way, and that refusal to settle for less is what broke the thing open.

Zen · Hakuin

He taught that great doubt brings great awakening and small doubt brings small awakening, so the size of what you find matches the size of what you actually asked.

Hasidic teaching · the Baal Shem Tov

He said a person is wherever their will is. You are not located where your body sits but where your wanting points.
