Jeremiah 3:10 Meaning Yet for All This Her Treacherous Sister

Yet for all this her treacherous sister, Judah, has not returned to me with her whole heart, but only in pretense,” says Yahweh.

What does Jeremiah 3:10 mean?

Returning in pretense is the sickness here: the body bends, the mouth says the right words, but the heart looks somewhere else the whole time. A person can polish the surface of a life and let the inside stay dull, and call it repentance.

Sufism

Returning in pretense is the sickness here: the body bends, the mouth says the right words, but the heart looks somewhere else the whole time. A person can polish the surface of a life and let the inside stay dull, and call it repentance. The cure is small and hard: turn one private corner of the heart honestly, where no one is watching and nothing is gained.

The One being turned to is not fooled by the show. He is nearer to that heart than its own pretending, and He waits in the very place the person avoids.

Live Jeremiah 3:10 today

  1. Pick the one corner of your life you have been keeping tidy on the outside and leave the inside alone. Be honest about it today, privately, with nothing to gain.
  2. In the next conversation where you usually perform being fine, say the smaller true thing instead. One honest sentence beats an hour of the good version.
  3. When you catch yourself going through motions you no longer mean, at work, at dinner, on a call, stop mid-motion and either mean it or admit you do not.

Which part of you have you been careful not to turn around, because you suspect it is the part that matters?

The same truth in other traditions

Analects · Confucius

He had no patience for ceremony performed with an absent heart, since the form without the feeling is empty. What is left is a show, and it convinces no one who looks closely.

Zen · Dogen

Practice is not a performance for anyone watching, including yourself. Sitting with a divided mind while keeping the posture perfect is still a divided mind.

Bhagavad Gita

An act done to be seen, or done for the credit it earns, carries little of its own weight. What the heart was doing during it is the whole substance.
