Jeremiah 3:3 Meaning Therefore the Showers Have Been Withheld

Therefore the showers have been withheld and there has been no latter rain; yet you have had a prostitute’s forehead and you refused to be ashamed.

What does Jeremiah 3:3 mean?

The higher mind stops pouring down when the center of consciousness gives itself to the lower thought. The latter rain is truth descending from higher consciousness, the fresh downpour meant to ripen a person, and its withholding is that flow drying up.

The higher mind stops pouring down when the center of consciousness gives itself to the lower thought. The latter rain is truth descending from higher consciousness, the fresh downpour meant to ripen a person, and its withholding is that flow drying up. What cuts it off is named at once: a whore's forehead.

The forehead is the center of consciousness, and to make it a whore's is to let that center consciously take in whatever rises from the lower mind, coupling with every passing thought instead of being kept still for meditation. A center given over that freely loses its capacity for shame, its inward check. So the drought is not punishment sent from outside but consequence: a consciousness that beds down with the lower nature has closed itself to the higher rain it once received.

Latter rain: truth descending from higher consciousness, the ripening downpour into a person Forehead: the center of consciousness, meant to be kept still but given here to every lower thought

Live Jeremiah 3:3 today

  1. Keep your first and last thirty minutes of the day free of feeds and inboxes. What gets in first tends to run the rest of the day.
  2. In one conversation today, let a comment or a bit of gossip go by without taking it in. You can hear a thing without letting it move in with you.
  3. When you are stressed and the urge to check everything at once hits, put the phone in another room for twenty minutes. Guarded attention is not rigid, it is simply yours again.

What have I been letting walk straight into my head today without asking?

Zen

A mind that takes in every passing thought is a muddy pool, and nothing reflects in it. Let it sit undisturbed and the sky reappears.

Bhagavad Gita 6

Steady the mind as you would shield a lamp flame from the wind. Left open to every draft, it gives no usable light.

The practice is guarding what you let in. Attention left wide open to anything that arrives gets scattered, and nothing ripens.
