God's response to a people who broke faith is not to lower the terms but to promise a deeper bond, one he will keep from the inside. A covenant is a sacred family agreement, and the promise here is that the whole divided family, north and south, gets gathered back into a single one.

God's response to a people who broke faith is not to lower the terms but to promise a deeper bond, one he will keep from the inside. A covenant is a sacred family agreement, and the promise here is that the whole divided family, north and south, gets gathered back into a single one.
Catholic reading hears that promise finding its answer at the Last Supper, when the cup is named the new covenant in Christ's blood, and continuing in every Mass. What was carved on stone is meant to be written on human hearts, so that obedience becomes something a person wants rather than something imposed.

Lao Tzu wrote that when rules multiply, the heart has already gone out of things, and the highest virtue acts without needing to be told. What is written outside is a sign of what is missing inside.
Confucius said that at seventy he could follow his heart and still not step outside the line, after a lifetime of practice. The goal is wanting the good, not obeying it.
Krishna promises that he does not abandon the one who falls away, and that even the person who turns back after long wandering is taken in and brought home. The bond holds from his side.
