Jeremiah 32:10 Meaning I Signed the Deed

I signed the deed, sealed it, called witnesses, and weighed the money in the balances to him.

What does Jeremiah 32:10 mean?

A conviction that has cost nothing can be revised in silence, and it always is. Silver weighed out in front of witnesses does what private agreement never does: it installs the belief that God's promise had only described.

A conviction that has cost nothing can be revised in silence, and it always is.

Silver weighed out in front of witnesses does what private agreement never does: it installs the belief that God's promise had only described. The transaction set the state, the state set the emotion carried into a besieged city, and that emotion produced a man acting like land is waiting on the far side of the ruin.

Witnesses cut off retreat. Sealed and paid for, the purchase cannot later be downgraded into something he felt strongly one afternoon. A person who leaves the site of a decision holding an intention keeps the option of never having decided, and pays for it when the same insight arrives again years later with nothing built on it.

Live Jeremiah 32:10 today

  1. Write down the decision you made in a strong moment, with today's date. Intentions fade on their own, a dated line does not.
  2. Say it to one person who will remember. Text the friend, tell your partner at dinner. Choose someone who will actually bring it up again.
  3. When the pressure comes off and the decision suddenly seems less urgent, go back and read what you wrote. That is exactly the hour it was written for.

How many times have I had this same realization and left with nothing but a feeling?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Epictetus

Do not tell people your principles, let them see them in what you do. A conviction kept private can always be quietly edited.

Judaism · the ketubah

What matters gets written down, signed, and witnessed. Writing it is not distrust, it is how a promise stops being a mood.

Zen

A vow spoken aloud in front of others is a different thing from the same vow in your head. The room makes it hard to take back.
