EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

Healing and revelation come together here, and that order matters. The cure is not merely the mending of the outer situation. It is the uncovering of something that was hidden, peace and truth in abundance, waiting beneath the surface of a troubled life.

The deepest sickness is the sense of separation, the feeling of being cut off and at war with what is. The cure is to become present, and in presence to see what was always there. Peace is not manufactured and truth is not achieved. They are revealed, the way the sky is revealed when the clouds part, because they were the ground of your being all along.

BUDDHISM

Buddhism

Ārogya: Freedom from disease Health in the deepest sense, the condition of one no longer sick. A city with a wound in its side, its houses torn down to plug the breach, is offered more than a bandage over the gap. The same offer stands for a mind so used to its own ache that it takes the ache for ordinary life, and health of that kind counts as the highest gain there is.

Nirodha: Cessation The ending of an ailment at its source. Curing works the way a fever breaks: the heat goes out because whatever fed it has stopped, and no one has to hold the body down. Jerusalem's sickness runs deeper than its walls, into whatever keeps dragging the siege back around, and once that is cut off the cure is finished with nothing added on top.

Dhammacakkhu: The eye of the Dhamma The sight that opens when things are seen as they are. Revealing works like a lamp carried into a dark room: nothing in the room changes, and everything in it becomes visible. Jeremiah hears this promise while shut in the court of the guard with the army outside, which is often where such seeing arrives, in a locked room rather than an open field.

Sacca: Truth Truth as what is the case, something to walk and test. Its arrival alongside health and cure is no accident, since the four truths run in a physician's order: the disease, its cause, its ending, and the course of treatment. Handed over in abundance, it is the sort a person can live on, unlike the comfortable words other prophets were calling down from these same walls.

Santi: Peace Stillness, the quiet left when the fires of wanting and hating go out. Abundance is the surprising word, since a stopping sounds like it should be thin; instead peace comes full, the way a house goes quiet after the shouting ends and the quiet turns out to be the best thing in it. Peace of this kind does not wait on the army going home, which is why it can be poured out on a city while the siege ramps are still going up.

Live Jeremiah 33:6 today

  1. Before you reach for your phone in the morning, stay still for one minute and feel the room. You are not making calm, you are letting it show.
  2. In your next hard conversation, stop trying to win the point. Listen until you can feel the person instead of your argument, and watch how much of the war was yours.
  3. On the commute, put the podcast away for one stretch of road. Let the noise of the day settle, the way silt settles in a glass of water left alone.

What in me is already peaceful, waiting for me to stop stirring things up?

The moon is always full behind the clouds. Practice does not create the light, it only stops the hands that cover it.

Tao Te Ching 16

Return to stillness and you return to your root. Nothing is added there, something long forgotten is simply found again.

Buddhism

Suffering grows from the fight against how things are. When that fight ends, peace is not earned, it is uncovered, because it was never gone.
