Jeremiah 34:5 · World English Bible

Jeremiah 34:5 Meaning You Will Die in Peace

You will die in peace; and with the burnings of your fathers, the former kings who were before you, so they will make a burning for you. They will lament you, saying, “Ah Lord!” for I have spoken the word,’ says Yahweh.

What does Jeremiah 34:5 mean?

To die in peace is not a reward for comfort; it is the fruit of meeting the end without resistance. The ceremonies and the lament belong to the world of form, and they pass.

Ego v. Being

To die in peace is not a reward for comfort; it is the fruit of meeting the end without resistance. The ceremonies and the lament belong to the world of form, and they pass. The peace itself is something the mourning around you can neither give nor take away.

When you no longer cling to the passing shape of your life, the dissolving of that form loses its terror. You meet your final hour quietly because you have stopped defending what was always temporary. That is what dying in peace means: to let go of form without the mind's struggle.

Live Jeremiah 34:5 today

  1. Delete something you have been saving for no reason, old photos of a version of you that is gone, a saved draft, a bookmark from a life you no longer live. Feel how little it actually costs to let the shape go.
  2. Call the oldest person in your family and ask them what they have let go of. Do not advise, just listen to someone further along the road than you.
  3. When a plan collapses this week, the flight, the offer, the relationship you thought was settled, say out loud that this form is ending, and do not add a word of argument.

What am I defending that was always going to pass?

Do not look down on death, welcome it, since it is one of the things nature wants. Leave life as an actor leaves the stage when the play is done.

The body is a garment the deathless takes up and lays down. The one who sees this does not mourn the changing of clothes.

Be born, live, return. The one who goes along with this is at ease, the one who grips tries to hold water in a closed fist.
