Whatever a person lists when they picture safety is the real master of their decisions, not the promise they made out loud.

Asking for guidance and obeying it run on two separate systems. A person asks with the part of them that wants to be righteous, and moves with the part that already decided which pain is unbearable, and the second part wins whenever the two disagree.

Each item on that list is a wound already lived through, which is why it outweighed a promise never yet felt. God offered to build and plant them where they stood, but that offer attached pleasure to staying in the exact place the fear had been earned. Fear chose the road, the road chose the country, and the country chose the ending. Anyone who never examines what they cannot bear gets steered by it for years while believing they are choosing.

Live Jeremiah 42:14 today

  1. Write down the three things you most want to avoid. Not your goals, your dreads. That list has been making your decisions for longer than you think.
  2. Next time you ask someone for advice, watch whether you were asking or looking for permission. If you already knew the answer, say that out loud to them instead.
  3. When a choice today looks obvious because one option feels unbearable, name the fear before you move. Say it plainly, even just to yourself, then decide.

What am I so afraid of that I have let it pick my direction without ever saying so?

We chase comfort and flee discomfort, and call the result a free choice. Watching the pull is the beginning of not being dragged by it.

Tao Te Ching

The road that looks safest is often the long way into trouble. Grasping at security is how people lose it.
