Jeremiah 44:17 Meaning But We Will Certainly Perform Every Word

But we will certainly perform every word that has gone out of our mouth, to burn incense to the queen of the sky, and to pour out drink offerings to her, as we have done, we and our fathers, our kings and our princes, in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem; for then had we plenty of food, and were well, and saw no evil.

Self-Help

Whatever a person credits for the good years is what they will run back to when the years turn bad.

Assign a stretch of plenty to one cause and the assignment hardens into a belief long before anyone examines it. The belief sets what feels safe, safety sets the emotion under pressure, and that emotion decides where the hands go the hour fear arrives.

A linkage this conscious is still not a conclusion, which is why counter-argument bounces off it. Nobody gets talked out of a full stomach by a better doctrine. Pleasure was tied to the incense and pain to obeying God, and a vow is only that tie spoken. The cost is a household sacrificing to whatever it believes fed it, straight through the famine that follows.

Live Jeremiah 44:17 today

  1. Think of a good stretch in your life and ask honestly what you gave the credit to. The job, the city, the person, the habit. Then ask if that was really it.
  2. When someone in the group chat swears by the thing that worked for them once, resist the urge to argue. Ask what else was going on in that season instead.
  3. When fear hits today and your hand reaches for the old comfort, the phone, the drink, the spending, pause long enough to ask whether it ever actually helped.

What am I crediting for my best years that may not deserve it?

Stoicism · Epictetus

People are not moved by events but by what they have decided those events mean. The verdict, not the thing itself, is what runs them.

Buddhism

We cling hardest to whatever we believe once gave us pleasure, and that clinging survives every argument against it.

Bhagavad Gita

Whatever lesser thing a person worships out of desire, the reward they get is small and passing. The giving was never coming from the thing they credited.
