Jeremiah 48:11 Meaning Moab Has Been at Ease From

Moab has been at ease from his youth, and he has settled on his lees, and has not been emptied from vessel to vessel, neither has he gone into captivity: therefore his taste remains in him, and his scent is not changed.

What does Jeremiah 48:11 mean?

Wine left forever in one jar goes stale on its own sediment; it keeps its taste only because nothing ever disturbed it. So it is with a heart that has known only ease from youth, comfortable, settled, and quietly rotting in its unchanged self.

SUFISM

Sufism

Wine left forever in one jar goes stale on its own sediment; it keeps its taste only because nothing ever disturbed it. So it is with a heart that has known only ease from youth, comfortable, settled, and quietly rotting in its unchanged self. The very smoothness is the disease.

What cures it is the pouring out, the willingness to be emptied from vessel to vessel, shaken from habit into honest self-examination. That unsettling is not cruelty but attention. The One who tips the jar is present in every loss that stirs a person, clearing the sediment so a finer scent can rise.

Live Jeremiah 48:11 today

  1. Pick one comfortable habit today and set it down for the day. Skip the scroll before bed, take the longer walk, eat somewhere you did not choose by reflex, and pay attention to what shows up in the gap.
  2. Ask one person who knows you well what they think you are not seeing about yourself. Then listen all the way through without defending anything.
  3. When something gets disrupted today, the plan, the schedule, the route, do not rush to restore the old arrangement. Stay in the unsettled version a few minutes and see what it shows you.

What part of my life stays the same mostly because nothing has ever shaken it?

Zen

A cup already full can receive nothing, so the student is told to empty it first. Being poured out is the precondition for being filled.

Stoicism · Seneca

He warned that an untroubled life leaves a person untested and secretly weak, like a soldier who has never been in the field. Difficulty is what reveals whether anything was there.

Hinduism · the Upanishads

The self is found by stripping away what it is not, layer after layer, which is a kind of deliberate unsettling. Comfort keeps the layers in place.
