What does Jeremiah 5:31 mean?

A self can be governed by its own false voices and come to prefer the deception. A self can be governed by its own false voices and come to prefer the deception. The prophets are the imaginative faculty that should foresee truth but instead spins comforting lies, and the priests are the parts that mediate between the higher and the lower which have taken their rule from that falsehood. When the inner powers meant to guide a person are corrupt, the whole inward order bends to serve appearance.

My people are the ordinary faculties, the many energies of the self, and they love to have it so because the deceived condition is easier than waking. The closing question points to the reckoning inside a person: a consciousness built on its own flattering illusions must one day face what those illusions cannot answer.

Prophets: the imaginative faculty meant to foresee truth, here spinning flattering falsehood instead. Priests: the mediating powers between higher and lower self, ruling on the strength of that false vision. People: the ordinary faculties and energies of the self, content to be deceived because waking is harder.

Live Jeremiah 5:31 today

  1. Pick one story you tell yourself about why something in your life isn't working, and ask honestly whether you believe it because it's true or because it's comfortable. Just the question, no fixing required.
  2. Ask one person who knows you well what you seem to be avoiding, and then say nothing except thank you. The flinch you feel is the useful part.
  3. When you catch yourself building the case for your own side mid-argument, pause and ask what the other person would say you got wrong. Winning the point and seeing clearly are often two different moves.

What am I believing right now mostly because it lets me stay the same?

The mind spins stories it prefers over the ones that are accurate, and then takes shelter in them. The whole chain of suffering starts with that preference, not with the world.

Tao Te Ching 71

To know that you do not know is the healthy state. To mistake your own assumptions for knowledge is the sickness.
