Jeremiah 8:6 Meaning I Listened and Heard

I listened and heard, but they didn’t say what is right. No one repents of his wickedness, saying, “What have I done?” Everyone turns to his course, as a horse that rushes headlong in the battle.

What does Jeremiah 8:6 mean?

The question a person never asks is the reason their course never bends, no matter how fast they run it. Anyone who stops examining himself runs on momentum, and from the inside momentum feels exactly like direction.

Self-Help

The question a person never asks is the reason their course never bends, no matter how fast they run it.

Anyone who stops examining himself runs on momentum, and from the inside momentum feels exactly like direction. A man reads his own speed as proof he is going somewhere, the proof holds his confidence, and confidence drives the next mile.

God is listening for one sentence, the one that puts a man on the hook for his own outcomes, since nothing softer interrupts a gallop. A mind never sent looking for its own part will faithfully report there is none. Years of that, and a man arrives somewhere he never chose, asking who did this to him.

Live Jeremiah 8:6 today

  1. Before bed, close the apps and ask one honest question about today: what part of this was mine? Give it a real answer, not a verdict about someone else.
  2. Ask one person who sees you up close what you do that makes things harder for them, then stay quiet long enough to hear the whole answer.
  3. The next time you catch yourself rehearsing a complaint in traffic or in your head before a meeting, swap it for one sentence: what am I contributing to this?

If today kept repeating, where would it take you, and did you choose that?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Seneca

Every night put the day on trial and ask what you did badly, what you resisted, what you would do again. A life unreviewed runs on momentum and calls it progress.

Zen

Turn the light around and look at the one looking. Without that turn, speed is just a longer road in the same direction.

Hinduism · Bhagavad Gita

The mind can be your closest friend or your worst opponent, and which one depends entirely on whether you ever examine it.
