Job 1:5 · World English Bible

Job 1:5 Meaning It Was So

It was so, when the days of their feasting had run their course, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all. For Job said, “It may be that my sons have sinned, and renounced God in their hearts.” Job did so continually.

What does Job 1:5 mean?

What a person keeps doing when nothing is wrong is the whole of what they will have when everything is. Acting on what might have happened rather than on what has is the mark of a standard that runs ahead of events.

What a person keeps doing when nothing is wrong is the whole of what they will have when everything is.

Acting on what might have happened rather than on what has is the mark of a standard that runs ahead of events. Treating a private thought in someone else's heart as a real debt before God sets the state a man lives in, the state sets the emotion he rises with, and the emotion gets him out of bed early for work nobody asked him to do.

A practice kept for years, long after the reason for it has gone abstract, is quietly assembling the man who will meet the day it was never designed for. Without those years he meets the worst hour of his life with whatever he happens to feel that morning, and feeling is thin material to carry that weight.

Live Job 1:5 today

  1. Pick one small thing you do daily that nobody sees, five quiet minutes, a walk without your phone, a few lines written down. Keep it on the day it feels pointless, because that is the day it is actually being built.
  2. Do one unasked, unannounced kindness for someone in your house or your team this week, and let it stay unmentioned.
  3. In a tense meeting or a tense kitchen, use the habit you already have, the slow breath, the hand off the phone, the pause before the reply. Having it ready is the whole point.

What am I quietly building in myself right now, on a day when nothing is wrong?
