Ikhlāṣ: Sincerity Al-Ghazali gave a whole book of his Revival to this one thing: acting for God alone, with nothing else mixed in. Comfort and devotion usually arrive together, so a person can pray for twenty years and never learn which one they were serving. Sincerity is the part of worship that would still stand if every benefit were taken away.

Deeds are bodies and sincerity is their soul: the motive is what makes an act alive Ibn Ata Allah put it in that line. Two people can perform the same act, keep the same record, and look identical to everyone watching. The difference sits in the reason, which nobody outside can see, so a spotless life never settles on its own what is behind it.

Some worship out of want, and that is the trade of merchants: devotion with a price on it An old saying the Sufis repeat sorts worship three ways: merchants who want payment, slaves who fear punishment, free people who give thanks. All three keep the same hours and say the same words. Nobody can pick the merchant out of the group until the payments stop.

If I worship you hoping for paradise, keep me out of it: love that wants nothing back Rabia of Basra prayed this way, asking to be shut out of heaven if heaven was her reason for loving God. She had nothing against paradise, but she wanted a love that would hold with the reward removed. She took the payment off the table herself, so that whatever was left in her had to be love.

Balāʾ: Testing Gratitude and self-interest feel alike while the gifts keep arriving, so hardship here reads as a trial rather than a punishment. The Prophet is remembered as saying that the most heavily tested people are the prophets. Loss is the point where a person finds out what their devotion was resting on all along.

Live Job 1:9 today

  1. Do one small good thing today where there is no chance of being seen, no post, no mention, no one to tell. Watch whether part of you loses interest once the audience is gone.
  2. Help someone today without telling them what it cost you. Leave out the part where they learn how much you gave up.
  3. When something you have faithfully done stops paying off, the job, the effort, the relationship you kept showing up for, ask yourself honestly whether you would keep doing it anyway. Then decide in the open.

What would I still do if nothing good ever came back to me for it?

Bhagavad Gita

Act because the act is right, not for what the act will pay you. Devotion that needs a return is business wearing devotion's clothes.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

He told himself to do good the way a vine bears grapes, without turning around to be thanked for it. The asking for credit is the part that spoils the deed.

Taoism · Tao Te Ching

The highest goodness acts and then leaves, taking no credit and claiming nothing. What is done without a claim attached is the only thing that lasts.
