Job 11:7 Meaning Can You Fathom the Mystery of God

Can you fathom the mystery of God? Or can you probe the limits of the Almighty?

What does Job 11:7 mean?

Tanzīh: Holding God clear of every likeness Tanzīh keeps God free of every picture a mind already holds. Ibn Arabi warned that leaning only on God's distance builds its own fence, since a God who can only be far has been handed a shape.

Tanzīh: Holding God clear of every likeness Tanzīh keeps God free of every picture a mind already holds. Ibn Arabi warned that leaning only on God's distance builds its own fence, since a God who can only be far has been handed a shape. The honest use of it stops a person from mistaking their best idea of God for God, and it never requires them to stop asking.

Ḥijāb al-nūr: The veil of light Al-Ghazali described God's hiddenness as a veil made of light, like the sun stopping the eye that stares at it. Someone who sees nothing usually assumes the room is dark, and then assumes there was nothing to see. The eye is overwhelmed rather than starved, so coming up blank says nothing about whether anything is there.

The inability to grasp is itself grasping: hitting the limit is knowledge Abu Bakr said it and al-Ghazali kept repeating it. When the mind runs out and a person feels the edge, they have learned something exact about the size of what they are facing. The blank they hit is a finding, and they walk away knowing more than when they started.

Ḥayra: Bewilderment Ḥayra means standing lost in front of God, which Ibn Arabi ranked as a high place rather than a failure. Most people treat confusion as proof they did something wrong, and they hurry to cover it with an answer they do not hold. Being left with no explanation can be the most honest position available, and staying there is not the same as losing faith.

Nearer than the jugular vein: closeness does not wait on understanding The Quran puts God nearer to a person than their own neck vein. Someone told that God is out of reach often hears it as being shut out, as though the distance were aimed at them personally. That nearness holds while a person is still confused, so being unable to explain God is not the same as being far from him.

Live Job 11:7 today

  1. Tonight, when you want an explanation and none comes, try sitting with the blank for ten minutes instead of filling it with a podcast or a search. Let not knowing be the thing you are doing.
  2. If someone hands you a confident reason for your hard year, you can say kindly that you do not think anyone knows. You are allowed to leave the question open in front of another person.
  3. Under pressure at work to explain something nobody understands yet, say what you know and name the edge where it stops. The edge is real information and people trust it more than a guess.
