Job 12:3 Meaning But I Have Understanding as Well

But I have understanding as well as you; I am not inferior to you. Yes, who doesn’t know such things as these?

What does Job 12:3 mean?

When a man insists he is not less than those who lecture him, something in him has hardened into a position. The mind loves to defend its ground, to prove it already knows what everyone knows.

Ego v. Being

When a man insists he is not less than those who lecture him, something in him has hardened into a position. The mind loves to defend its ground, to prove it already knows what everyone knows. Underneath the arguing sits a small self measuring itself against others, keeping score.

Such understanding stays on the surface. It gathers facts and repeats them. Beneath the noise of who is right, a deeper knowing waits, quiet and unthreatened, needing no one to lose so that it may win. A person touches it only when the need to be superior falls silent.

Live Job 12:3 today

  1. When you read something today that you already know, resist the pull to comment that you already knew it. Let the knowing be enough on its own.
  2. In a conversation where someone explains something to you badly, let them finish anyway. Giving up the correction costs you nothing you actually need.
  3. In a meeting where you feel talked down to, say your piece once, plainly, then stop. The second lap is for the part of you that wants to win.

How much of what you say is for understanding, and how much is for standing?

Tao Te Ching 81

The one who really knows does not need to display it, and the one who displays it is still gathering. Knowing that has to be shown is still measuring itself against someone.
