EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

The animals do not argue. A hawk rides the wind without a theory about riding. The teaching Job points to is not spoken in words but lived in stillness, in creatures that have never once stepped out of the present moment into worry.

When a person watches a bird settle on a branch, the endless commentary in the head goes quiet for a breath, and in that gap the deeper knowing shows itself. What the beasts carry is presence, awareness of being alive right now without a single thought about it. The wisdom Job's friends chased in clever speech was already there in every wing and every field.

SUFISM

Sufism

Taqlīd: Belief held on someone else's say so Al-Ghazali kept warning about this. A person can repeat correct sentences about God for years without having looked at anything for themselves, and the confidence in the voice comes from the crowd around them. Anyone in the middle of trouble hears that kind of talk and knows at once that nothing behind it was ever tested.

Āyāt: Signs The Quran's word for the marks God leaves through the world, the same word it uses for its own lines. Someone taught that knowledge of God belongs to the learned will keep waiting for permission to know anything at all. Meanwhile the plainest evidence sits out in the open, and no credentials are needed to take it in.

Tafakkur: Reflection Al-Ghazali gave a whole book of the Revival to this slow attention to one created thing. Attention like that takes time and cannot be borrowed from anyone, which is why it leaves a person steadier than reading does. Someone who has watched one living creature closely for an hour comes away with something no summary hands over.

Everything in the heavens and the earth praises God, though you do not understand their praise: creation is already talking A line from the Quran that Sufis come back to again and again. The claim is that the world keeps speaking and the deafness sits on our side, buried under our own commentary. A person quiet long enough begins to catch how much was going on around them the whole time.

Tajallī: God stepping into view in a particular form Ibn Arabi's word for it. He held that no two of these showings ever repeat, so each creature carries something no other creature carries, and no book carries either. Someone who looks for God only in argument walks past the ordinary lives all around, each holding part of the answer.

AWARENESS

Indian Guru

Animals can teach because they have no theology. A bird has never doubted existence, never asked why it was born, never postponed its song until the argument was settled; it is simply here, whole, without a self standing apart to comment.

Men full of explanation were being sent away from explanation, out of the closed room of concepts and into the open where existence goes on saying the same thing without words. Watch a tree at dawn without naming anything and something in you falls quiet and matches it. That silence is the teaching, and no argument can hand it over.

Live Job 12:7 today

  1. Watch one living thing for a full minute today with your phone in your pocket: a pigeon on a wire, a dog on the sidewalk, a tree moving. Let your head go quiet while you do it.
  2. On a walk with someone, leave a stretch of it unfilled by talking. Let the two of you just be out in the weather together.
  3. When your mind is spinning before a hard call or a deadline, go to the window for thirty seconds and find something alive outside. Come back to the task from there.

When did you last be somewhere without commenting on it?

Zhuangzi

The fish does not study swimming and the bird keeps no theory of flight. They are simply doing what they are, and this is the teaching.

Zen

When you eat, eat. When you walk, walk. The whole instruction is to be where your body already is.

The mind runs ahead and behind while the body stays here. Training is mostly bringing attention back to the one place life is happening.
