Job 13:2 Meaning What You Know

What you know, I know also. I am not inferior to you.

What does Job 13:2 mean?

" The words arrive as defense, and defense always reveals a self that feels threatened. The ego cannot bear to be seen as less, so it hurries to prove its standing before anyone can lower it.

Ego v. Being

"What you know, I know also." The words arrive as defense, and defense always reveals a self that feels threatened. The ego cannot bear to be seen as less, so it hurries to prove its standing before anyone can lower it.

Yet all this knowing is borrowed content, thoughts passing through a mind, much the same in everyone. It is not who you are. The one who is aware of the thoughts cannot be ranked higher or lower. When you feel that awareness in yourself, the fear of being inferior loosens its grip, because awareness itself cannot be made smaller.

Live Job 13:2 today

  1. When you catch yourself drafting a reply in your head that is really about proving you are not the dumb one in the room, put the phone down for a minute and feel yourself breathing. The need to win the point usually fades once you stop feeding it.
  2. Next time someone explains something you already know, let them finish without saying "yeah, I know." Give them the small pleasure of telling you, and see how little it actually costs you.
  3. In a meeting where you feel sized up, drop the mental scoreboard for a moment and just be the one listening. You can still speak, but speak because something is worth saying, not because silence feels like losing.

What would you say differently today if you had nothing to defend?

Tao Te Ching

Those who truly know do not need to display it, and those who display it do not truly know. The urge to prove your standing is itself the sign that something unsteady is doing the talking.

Zen

A student full of what he has learned is like a cup already brimming. Nothing more can be poured in until he is willing to be empty, which means willing to look like less for a moment.

Stoicism · Epictetus

Your reputation and your cleverness are not yours, only on loan from other people's opinions. What is actually yours is the part of you that watches, and no one can rank that.
