Job 14:12 Meaning So Man Lies Down and Doesn’t Rise

so man lies down and doesn’t rise. Until the heavens are no more, they will not awake, nor be roused out of their sleep.

What does Job 14:12 mean?

The body lies down and does not rise again. This is the destiny of all form, and the ego, which knows itself only as form, trembles before it.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

The body lies down and does not rise again. This is the destiny of all form, and the ego, which knows itself only as form, trembles before it. Yet notice the word sleep, for sleep is never the end of the sleeper.

What lies down is the outer shape, the passing arrangement of matter and memory you took yourself to be. The awareness in which your whole life has appeared does not lie down with it. When you sense that dimension in yourself now, the fear of not waking loosens, because what you truly are is the awareness that watches life, not the body that falls away.

Live Job 14:12 today

  1. Sometime today, maybe late, sit still for two minutes and feel that there is something in you that is simply awake, under all the plans and the aging and the news. Nothing to figure out, just that quiet aliveness.
  2. Call or text someone older than you and ask them something real. Being near someone who has lived longer makes mortality less abstract and oddly less frightening.
  3. When a doctor's appointment, a hard diagnosis, or a scare about your body puts fear in your chest, feel the fear without arguing with it, and also feel the one in you who is watching the fear. Both are there.

If you are not only your body, what in you have you been neglecting?

The same truth in other traditions

Bhagavad Gita 2

The body is a garment that wears out and is set aside. What wore it was never born and does not end with the cloth.

Zen

A wave rises, holds its shape for a while, and lies back down. The water was never worried about the wave.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

You are a small stream of being in a long river, here briefly and then given back. Hold that lightly and the fear of the end loosens into something closer to gratitude.
