Job 22:21 Meaning Acquaint Yourself with Him

Acquaint yourself with him, now, and be at peace. By it, good will come to you.

What does Job 22:21 mean?

Acquaint now thyself, and notice that the word is now, not later. To know the sacred is not to believe something about it but to become present, to feel the alive stillness that is always underneath your thinking.

Ego v. Being

Acquaint now thyself, and notice that the word is now, not later. To know the sacred is not to believe something about it but to become present, to feel the alive stillness that is always underneath your thinking.

When you rest in that presence, peace is not something you achieve but something you stop obscuring. And from that peace, right action flows on its own. The good that comes to you is not a reward for staying calm. It is what naturally happens when you meet life from stillness instead of from fear.

BUDDHISM

Buddhism

Kalyāṇamittatā: Good friendship Good friendship is the companionship that turns a person toward what is skillful. Eliphaz leans in with counsel sound in its shape but aimed at the wrong man, having already decided the sores and the buried children are a bill come due. Prescribing before asking where it hurts treats an idea of the patient instead of the patient, and still the words themselves are worth keeping after the diagnosis behind them collapses.

Saddhā: Trust Trust is the willingness to move toward what you have not yet seen for yourself. "Acquaint yourself" is the language of an introduction: you stand near someone long enough to learn a face, and that cannot be done from across the room. Job has been arguing at a distance for chapters, and the invitation is to come closer before the answer arrives.

Sandiṭṭhika: Visible here and now Something sandiṭṭhika is known by direct sight, in this moment. The "now" carries weight, because acquaintance is the knowing you have of a neighbor, not of a name on a list read aloud to you. Job's friends have been handing him God secondhand through the whole argument, and he will say later that he had heard with his ears until his own eye saw.

Santi: Peace Santi is the peace of a fever cooling. "Be at peace" leaves the ash heap where it sits and the herds unreturned; what settles is the quarrel inside a man demanding that the world explain itself to him. A pot lifted off the fire stops boiling well before it goes cold, and that first stillness is the whole of what is being offered.

Puñña: Merit Puñña is the good that ripens back on the one who does good. "By it, good will come to you" holds the way fruit follows a planted seed, on its own schedule and in its own shape, while Eliphaz reads it as coin traded across a counter and takes Job's unbalanced account for theft. Good does come, though the ledger closes later than a friend keeping score would like.

CYBERNETICS

Cybernetics

A man at war with the deeper part of himself carries a tension he mistakes for drive. Getting on speaking terms with that quiet inner ground, the part that steers when the arguing mind rests, settles the whole nervous system. Peace of this sort is no reward handed out for effort. It arrives when the striving against oneself stops.

Out of that calm the machinery runs clean. The success mechanism, jammed before by strain, begins moving a person toward what he pictured. Good comes because the friction is gone. When the self stops fighting its own foundation, what it was reaching for finally has room to reach it back.

Live Job 22:21 today

  1. Take one everyday thing today, the first sip of coffee, warm water on your hands, the walk from the car, and be completely there for it. No podcast, no phone, just that.
  2. When you are talking with someone, put the phone face down and out of reach. Full attention is the most honest form of love most of us get to give.
  3. In the middle of a stressful stretch at work, stop for three breaths before you answer the next message. Act from the steadier place underneath the hurry, not from the hurry.

What would today feel like if you were not waiting for it to get better?

Hinduism · Upanishads

The sacred is not far off and waiting to be reached. It is nearer than your own breath, the awareness in which this very moment is appearing.

Sufism · Rumi

You have been knocking from inside the house the whole time. The door you are looking for is the one you are standing behind.

Zen

Before enlightenment, chop wood and carry water. After enlightenment, chop wood and carry water. Nothing changes except that you are actually here for it.
