Job 23:15 Meaning Therefore I Am Terrified at His Presence

Therefore I am terrified at his presence. When I consider, I am afraid of him.

What does Job 23:15 mean?

The fear does not arrive with the presence. It arrives with the considering.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

The fear does not arrive with the presence. It arrives with the considering. As long as a man simply stands in what is before him, a vast stillness holds and nothing needs defending. Then thought begins its work, turning the presence into a figure who watches, weighs, and may condemn, and the trembling starts.

What troubles him is the story his mind has built around the presence, not the presence itself. The dread lives in the thinking, and it grows louder the more he considers. When the considering finally quiets, only the presence remains, and it was never the thing to be afraid of.

Live Job 23:15 today

  1. When your mind starts building the worst version of tomorrow at eleven at night, name what is actually in the room with you, the bed, the dark, your breathing. The horror movie is being made inside your head.
  2. Before a hard conversation, stop rehearsing all the ways it could go wrong. Walk in without a script and let the actual person be in front of you.
  3. When a message arrives from your boss saying only "can we talk," let it be those three words instead of the fifteen scenarios you add to them. Answer, then do your work until the conversation happens.

How much of what frightens you today exists only in the thinking about it?

The same truth in other traditions

Buddhism

The mind shoots the second arrow. The fear you feel is usually your thinking about the situation, not the situation itself.

Stoicism · Epictetus

People are not disturbed by events but by the view they take of them. The dread is in the commentary.

Hinduism · Advaita Vedanta

A man feared the snake on the path until morning showed him a rope. Nothing on the path changed, only the story he was telling about it.
