Job 24:13 Meaning These Are of Those Who Rebel Against

These are of those who rebel against the light. They don’t know its ways, nor stay in its paths.

What does Job 24:13 mean?

The light is consciousness itself, and there is in the human mind a strange resistance to it, a turning away from presence because it dissolves the stories the ego lives by. To rebel against the light is to stay asleep in thought, and so its ways remain unknown.

Ego v. Being

The light is consciousness itself, and there is in the human mind a strange resistance to it, a turning away from presence because it dissolves the stories the ego lives by.

To rebel against the light is to stay asleep in thought, and so its ways remain unknown. Not hidden, only unseen. The path opens the instant you become present to this moment, and then you can walk it, because for the first time you can see where you actually are.

Live Job 24:13 today

  1. When you reach for your phone out of habit today, pause with your hand on it and ask whether you are turning toward something or away from something. Either answer is fine. Just know which one it is.
  2. When someone says something true about you that you would rather not hear, stay in the conversation instead of changing the subject. Let it land before you decide what to do with it.
  3. In the middle of a day running on autopilot, stop and feel your feet on the floor and the air in the room. One honest moment of being here breaks the spell for a while.

What truth about your life have you been careful not to look at directly?

The same truth in other traditions

Hinduism · Upanishads

The prayer is to be led from darkness into light, from sleep into waking. The light is not somewhere else, it is being awake to what is already here.

Buddhism

The word buddha simply means one who woke up. Everyone else is not being punished, just still dreaming inside their thoughts.

Plato · Allegory of the Cave

People chained facing the wall preferred the shadows to the sun, because stepping into real light hurt their eyes and ruined the only story they knew.
