EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

Upon whom does that light not arise? There is no one it excludes. The same awareness that looks out through your eyes looks out through every other, one light wearing countless forms, appearing as many yet never divided.

The mind cannot count it, because it is not a thing among things; it is the space in which all things appear. And it does not favor the worthy and pass over the rest. Presence shines equally in every being, saint and stranger alike. When you truly see this, separation begins to dissolve, because the life in you is the very same life you meet in everyone else.

Live Job 25:3 today

  1. Sit somewhere ordinary for a minute, a bus stop, a parking lot, and let your eyes rest on people passing without sorting them into interesting or not. Same life in each one, looking out.
  2. In your next conversation, especially with someone you find tiring, stay quiet long enough to feel that there is a whole person in there, awake the way you are awake.
  3. When a comment in a group chat or a reply thread makes you want to write someone off, pause before typing. The person on the other end is as real to themselves as you are to yourself.

Who did I quietly leave out of the light today?

The same truth in other traditions

Upanishads

The same self that looks out from you looks out from every creature. Seeing one's own self in all beings, and all beings in one's own self, is the end of fear.

Buddhism · Metta practice

Goodwill is trained without borders: self, friend, stranger, enemy, all the same. The practice works because the heart's natural warmth was never meant to stop at the people we approve of.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

One reason runs through all rational beings, so we are limbs of a single body, not separate parts competing. To work against another person is to work against yourself.
