Job 27:10 Meaning Will He Delight Himself in the Almighty

Will he delight himself in the Almighty, and call on God at all times?

What does Job 27:10 mean?

Devotion that only pressure produces disappears the moment the pressure lifts, and delight is what tells the difference. Trouble manufactures a prayer life that dissolves the week the trouble does, because the man was moving away from what hurt and God was merely the nearest exit.

Devotion that only pressure produces disappears the moment the pressure lifts, and delight is what tells the difference.

Trouble manufactures a prayer life that dissolves the week the trouble does, because the man was moving away from what hurt and God was merely the nearest exit. Delight is the honest test precisely because it cannot be manufactured that way. It means pleasure has been linked to God himself rather than to relief, and what a person has linked pleasure to is what he goes to when no crisis is pushing him anywhere.

A man can spend thirty years assembling the habits of faith on the strength of emergencies alone. Then the season arrives that decides everything, and he discovers he has an emergency number rather than a relationship, and no practice at all in calling on God when there is nothing to ask for.

Live Job 27:10 today

  1. Pray or sit quietly for a few minutes today with nothing to ask for. If your mind reaches for a request, let it pass and just stay.
  2. Text one person something that is not a question, a favor, or a logistics message. Just something you liked or thought of, with no errand in it.
  3. Next time a crisis passes and the relief hits, keep the same practice going for a week after. The week after the fear lifts is the honest one.

Who do I actually reach for when I need nothing?

Bhagavad Gita

There is devotion that comes looking for something and devotion that comes because it loves. Only the second one is still there when nothing is needed.

Sufism · Rabia of Basra

She prayed that if she served God out of fear or out of hope for reward, she should be denied both, and asked to be left only with God.

Stoicism · Seneca

A friendship kept for what it provides ends the day the provision does. A real one has no errand attached.
