Ego v. Being

The tongue falls still and cleaves to the roof of the mouth. There are moments when words simply stop, when the compulsive commentary in the head has nothing left to add. We usually fear such silence and rush to fill it, but that stillness is not a lack.

It is the ground beneath all speech, the awareness out of which words arise and into which they fall away. In true presence the mind grows quiet, not because it is forced, but because it meets something deeper than itself and has no more need to speak. When the talking stops, the restless mind settles, and in that silence you notice the awareness that was there all along, beneath every word.

Live Job 29:10 today

  1. Sometime today, when you reach for your phone out of habit, just stop and sit there instead. Let the quiet be awkward for a minute and see what is underneath it.
  2. In a conversation with someone, let a pause sit without rushing to fill it. You may find the other person says the truer thing in the space you left open.
  3. When a group chat or a meeting gets heated and you feel the pull to reply right away, hold back. Let the silence do what your words were about to try to do.

What would you hear today if you stopped filling every quiet moment?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching 56

Those who know do not talk, and those who talk do not know. The deepest understanding closes the mouth rather than filling it.

Zen

A teacher once answered a long question with silence, and the student understood more than any explanation could have given. The pause is not an empty space between teachings, it is the teaching.

Stoicism · Epictetus

Keep silence for the most part, and speak only when you must, briefly. Most of what we say adds nothing, and the habit of commenting on everything keeps us from hearing anything.
