If I have made gold my hope, and have said to the fine gold, ‘You are my confidence;’
Muḥāsaba: Taking account of yourself Al-Ghazali describes going over your own heart the way a shop owner checks the books at the end of the day. Reliance hides well: a person can say all the right things about trusting God and still feel relief at a healthy bank balance.

SUFISM
Muḥāsaba: Taking account of yourself Al-Ghazali describes going over your own heart the way a shop owner checks the books at the end of the day. Reliance hides well: a person can say all the right things about trusting God and still feel relief at a healthy bank balance. That flicker of relief is the honest answer, and finding it means looking at yourself when nobody else is asking.
Shirk khafī: Hidden idolatry The tradition's name for handing something else the confidence that belongs to God. Nobody decides this on a given afternoon; money slides into the place where trust sits, over years of small moments when it came through and nothing else did. The prayers can stay sincere while the weight of a whole life has quietly moved.
Wretched is the servant of the dinar and the servant of the dirham: money ends up as the master A saying of the Prophet about who ends up serving whom. Someone with savings believes they are holding the money, while the money is quietly setting their moods, their schedule, and their fears. When the numbers drop and the whole day goes dark, the money has been running things for a long time.
Tawakkul: Trust in God Al-Ghazali gives this a whole book in his Revival: the heart leaning its full weight on God. Work continues and the account stays open, and the change happens underneath, in where a person's calm comes from. Someone settled this way can watch a deal collapse and stay steady, because their footing was never in the deal.
Faqr: Poverty before God The Quran tells people plainly that they are the poor ones and God is the rich one. Poverty here covers everyone, the wealthy included, since nobody made their own lungs or arranged their next heartbeat. Seeing that takes the pressure off the money, which was never strong enough to hold a life up.

SELF-HELP
Whatever a person leans on for certainty ends up deciding which risks they take and who they can afford to be.
Money looks like the most dependable thing in the world, which is why certainty, first of the personality's needs, attaches itself there quietly and without any decision being made. Trust turns into protection, protection turns into obedience, and a man arranges his choices around the balance rather than around God while telling himself the gold is merely a tool.
The oath is testable precisely because the gold is already gone and the man swearing it is still upright, which means his confidence was never sitting in the vault. Keeping it there costs a person the freedom to be honest when honesty is expensive.
Sufism lens
If the number dropped by a third tonight, what would I still have that matters?
Whoever piles up treasure has more to lose, and the piling never ends. What is enough is already safe, because nobody can take it from you.
No amount of money ever satisfies wanting, the way no rain fills a cracked jar. Whoever hands their peace to their possessions has handed it to something that leaks.
Epictetus taught that money, status, and property are on loan from fortune and can be recalled without warning. Put your confidence there and your calm belongs to someone else's timing.
