Job 32:16 Meaning Shall I Wait

Shall I wait, because they don’t speak, because they stand still, and answer no more?

What does Job 32:16 mean?

There comes a moment when the talking stops, when the mind that always has an answer finally stands still and speaks no more. Most people fear this silence and rush to fill it.

Ego v. Being

There comes a moment when the talking stops, when the mind that always has an answer finally stands still and speaks no more. Most people fear this silence and rush to fill it. Yet in the waiting, in the pause where no words come, something deeper than thought becomes available to you.

Stillness is not emptiness. When the compulsive answering ceases and you simply wait, you sink beneath the noise of the mind into the awareness underneath. What no argument could reach is found in the quiet. This is why waiting matters: only when the talking stops can you notice the aware presence that was there beneath the words all along.

Live Job 32:16 today

  1. Sit for five minutes with no input, no phone, no plan. Let the discomfort of having nothing to do pass through, and stay a bit longer.
  2. When someone stops talking mid-story, do not jump in. Give them room and the real thing often comes out next.
  3. Before answering a message that annoyed you, set a timer for ten minutes and do something else. What you write after will be truer than what you would have fired off.

What might I hear if I waited a little longer before answering?

Tao Te Ching

Muddy water clears when you stop stirring it and let it stand. Doing nothing for a while is doing exactly what is needed.

Zen

Sitting is not waiting for something to happen, it is letting the mind settle until what is here becomes obvious. Nothing has to be added.

Stoicism · Epictetus

When something hits you, do not answer straight away. Pause, and in that gap you get to see clearly instead of reacting.
