Job 33:31 Meaning Mark Well

Mark well, Job, and listen to me. Hold your peace, and I will speak.

What does Job 33:31 mean?

To truly hear anything, you must first hold your peace. Not merely close your mouth, but quiet the endless commentary of the mind that is forever preparing its reply, forever judging, never simply present with what is.

Ego v. Being

To truly hear anything, you must first hold your peace. Not merely close your mouth, but quiet the endless commentary of the mind that is forever preparing its reply, forever judging, never simply present with what is.

Most of what people call listening is only waiting for their turn to speak. When you hold your peace inwardly and grow still, a space opens in which real listening becomes possible. In that stillness you receive what could never enter a noisy mind. So become quiet within, and truth can finally reach you, because only a silent mind has room to receive it.

  1. Sit for two minutes with no input today, no podcast, no feed. Let the mental chatter run and do not follow it anywhere.
  2. In your next conversation, do not plan your reply while the other person is talking. When they stop, let a beat of silence pass before you answer.
  3. In a meeting where you feel the urge to jump in and correct someone, hold it. Listen until they finish, then see whether what you wanted to say still needs saying.

When was the last time you listened without already knowing what you were going to say?

Zen

A cup that is already full cannot be filled. Emptiness is the readiness to receive.

Tao Te Ching

A room is useful because of the empty space in it, not the walls. What is open is what makes room for anything to arrive.

Judaism · Pirkei Avot

The sages taught that silence is a fence around wisdom. Keeping quiet is not the absence of thought, it is what protects your capacity to understand.
