Jīvitindriya: The Life Faculty Vitality, warmth, and awareness hold a body upright; withdraw them and it lies still. Elihu pictures God drawing breath back into himself, and in that instant every chest in the world stops at once. Breath was on loan the whole time, the way a lamp burns oil it never owned.

Anicca: Impermanence Whatever is put together comes apart. Elihu offers the collapse of all flesh as a hypothetical, something that would happen if God turned inward, yet every body is already doing it at its own pace, the way iron rusts whether or not anyone is watching. Speed is the only difference between the catastrophe he imagines and an ordinary afternoon.

Pathavīdhātu: The Earth Element Bone, hair, and nail are earth on loan, eaten as grain and drunk as water. Dust walked around as a man for a while and then lay back down in the field it came from. The ground takes back what it lent, and no new event occurs in the taking.

Anattā: Not-self Searching a body for its owner turns up organs, warmth, and thinking, with no one standing behind them holding the deed. Elihu's argument works only because breath that can be gathered back was never anyone's property; a man who owned his own would have grounds to bargain. Job has been pressing his case as though there were someone permanent in him to be wronged, and dust does not contain that someone.

Maraṇassati: Mindfulness of Death Death kept deliberately in view, several times a day, is a practice rather than a mood. "All flesh together" leaves nobody standing outside the sentence to watch it fall on other people, which is why the thought is worth holding close instead of pushing away. Someone who remembers each morning that this body is on its way back to the field settles quarrels faster and hoards less.

Live Job 34:15 today

  1. Once today, while you are waiting for something to load, remember that this body is on loan and the loan has a term. Not to spook yourself, just so the small stuff shrinks to its real size.
  2. Call the person you keep meaning to call. The aunt, the old friend, the parent you talk to twice a year. You are both made of dust on a timer, and the call costs ten minutes.
  3. In the middle of the argument where you were going to hold out for weeks, let it end today. There is a version of you that will not get the weeks, and that version would settle this now.

If your time here is borrowed, what are you still guarding as though you owned it?

The same truth in other traditions

Taoism · Zhuangzi

When his wife died, Zhuangzi sat and sang, because she had gone back into the same great turning that brought her out. To wail against that is to argue with the seasons.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

Soon you will be ash or bones and a name, and not long after that, not even the name. The breath in you is borrowed from the air and goes back to it, so hold it lightly.

Bhagavad Gita 2

Bodies come out of the unseen, take a shape for a while, and go back into the unseen. Grieving over that process is grieving over something that was never otherwise.
