EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

A suffering man protests that he is right and that life has wronged him. The pain is severe, and out of it rises a story: I am good, so this should not be happening to me. The mind builds a case, names a defendant, demands a verdict.

What torments a person here is not only the loss but the resistance to it, the endless argument with what already is. The label righteous becomes another weight. When the arguing quiets, the suffering stops feeding on itself, and life is met as it comes rather than as it was supposed to be.

Live Job 34:5 today

  1. When something goes wrong today, catch the sentence this should not be happening to me and let it finish without feeding it. Then deal with what is actually in front of you.
  2. In an argument with someone close, try dropping the need to be shown right. See what becomes possible when winning is off the table.
  3. When a plan collapses at work, give yourself one minute of honest frustration, then stop replaying how unfair it is and start with what the situation now is.

How much of your pain today is the thing itself, and how much is the argument with it?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Epictetus

We are not disturbed by what happens but by our opinions about what happens. The verdict we attach to an event does more damage than the event.

Buddhism · the parable of the two arrows

The first arrow is the pain itself. The second arrow is everything we add to it, the protest, the why me, and that one we fire ourselves.

Tao Te Ching

Water does not argue with the shape of the riverbed. It yields and so it moves, where resistance only breaks against the stone.
