Mid-century illustration of Job sitting in the ashes under a storm, light breaking through the clouds

Job 36:26 · World English Bible

Job 36:26 Meaning Behold

Behold, God is great, and we don’t know him. The number of his years is unsearchable.

What does Job 36:26 mean?

Tanzīh: Keeping God clear of every comparison Tanzīh refuses to shrink God down to anything a mind can picture. Someone in pain grabs the nearest image, a judge who has already ruled or a friend gone quiet, and then argues with that image instead of with God.

Tanzīh: Keeping God clear of every comparison Tanzīh refuses to shrink God down to anything a mind can picture. Someone in pain grabs the nearest image, a judge who has already ruled or a friend gone quiet, and then argues with that image instead of with God. Every picture has edges, and the one being pictured has none, so a person who sets the picture down loses nothing but a wrong size.

God has seventy thousand veils of light and darkness: the hiding has a cause A saying of the Prophet, one al-Ghazali built a whole book on, counts veils of light and of darkness between us and God. Some of that cover is our own dimness, and some is sheer brightness, the way nobody stares straight at the sun. A person who feels shut out hears the silence as rejection, when the distance comes from how much light is there.

Incapacity to grasp him is itself a grasp of him: coming up empty counts as finding An early saying, often traced to Abu Bakr and repeated by al-Ghazali, calls the failure to comprehend God a form of comprehension. Admitting you do not know him usually feels like losing ground, proof that you never had hold of anything. Yet a mind that has run out of room has found out where its own edge sits, and that finding is worth having.

Ḥayra: Being at a loss before God Ibn Arabi treats ḥayra, standing bewildered, as one of the highest places a person reaches. Most people expect that drawing nearer to God clears things up, while in practice the questions only get bigger. Someone who wanted a reason for their pain and came away with none is standing where the ground runs out, which is nearer than they think.

He is the First and the Last: nothing began him and nothing outlasts him The Quran calls God the First and the Last, before every beginning and after every end. For a person whose days feel long and whose strength is running out, being measured against that can sound crushing. The comfort sits in the difference: their trouble started on a date and will end, while he had no start at all.

Live Job 36:26 today

  1. When your mind starts arguing with a God who has already ruled against you, write the picture down and then put the pen down. You can set the picture aside without settling the question tonight.
  2. When a friend asks why this happened to you, try saying you do not know instead of filling the silence. Let one honest shrug sit between you.
  3. In a meeting or a hard conversation today, say the three words most people avoid: I do not know. Then stay in the room, which is the hard part.

What have I been picturing God as, and what would it cost me to put that picture down?

Tao Te Ching 1

The Tao that can be named is not the Tao. Any picture you can hold in your head has edges, and what you are reaching for does not.

Kena Upanishad

Whoever says he understands does not understand, and whoever admits he does not is closer. The not knowing is not a failure in the student.

Zhuangzi

Zhuangzi says what we know has a limit and what we do not know does not, so arguing from inside the small circle gets you nowhere. Finding the edge of your own circle is real knowledge.
