Job 37:2 Meaning Hear

Hear, oh, hear the noise of his voice, the sound that goes out of his mouth.

What does Job 37:2 mean?

The voice of God is the inner vibration a person can hear once attention turns inward and quiets, the sounding of the higher current through the deep places of the body. It does not enter through the ears from outside but rises through the frame of the one who listens, a resonance in the nervous system that religion has pictured as storm and sky.

Esoteric

The voice of God is the inner vibration a person can hear once attention turns inward and quiets, the sounding of the higher current through the deep places of the body. It does not enter through the ears from outside but rises through the frame of the one who listens, a resonance in the nervous system that religion has pictured as storm and sky. Attentive hearing is the stilling of thought's surface chatter until that steady inward sound becomes audible, the same current the old texts called the word out of the mouth of God. What issues from that mouth is the creative vibration itself, the power that runs the body from within, caught by an awareness grown quiet enough to hold it.

The voice and the mouth: the creative vibration sounding from the depth within, the humming inner current that runs the body and can be heard when thought grows still.

Live Job 37:2 today

  1. Put the earbuds down for one stretch of your commute or your walk. Let it be plain quiet, and listen past the traffic for whatever is underneath.
  2. When someone is talking, try listening with your whole body instead of preparing your reply. Most people can feel the difference within a sentence.
  3. In a loud, pressured hour, step into a stairwell or a bathroom for sixty seconds and do nothing. Not to recharge, just to let the quieter thing in you get a word in before you answer.

What have you been too loud to hear lately?

The same truth in other traditions

Hinduism · Nada yoga

There is an unstruck sound inside a person, heard not with the ears but when thought goes quiet. Listening for it is itself the practice.

Sufism · dhikr

The name is repeated until the repeating drops away and only the sounding remains, a hum the whole body takes up rather than something the mouth does.

Zen

Sit until the chatter thins out and what was always there becomes audible. Nothing new arrives, the surface simply stops covering the depth.
