PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychoanalysis

When the great voice finally speaks, it does not comfort. It tells the small figure to stand up and steady himself, because now the questions run the other way. The man who long demanded answers is told that he must answer.

This is what happens when a person meets a huge power they did not make and cannot control. Part of us wants to collapse or complain from the floor. Instead he must stay on his feet and answer in his own voice, because you can only face something that overwhelming, without being swallowed by it, if you stay yourself.

Self-Help

When your question has no possible answer, the only thing that frees you is being handed a better one.

Repeating a question that cannot be answered still does work on a man: it holds attention on his own case, held attention sets the state, the state sets the emotion, and the emotion swells one life's loss to the size of the world.

Yahweh never settles the legal argument. He takes the asking away, and the new questions move Job's focus off his own ledger and onto snow and sea and the ordinances of heaven, which changes his state before it delivers one piece of information. Agreeing to stand and be questioned is the decision, because a man in that position has given up being the center of his own inquiry. Keeping the old question costs him every hour spent building a case for a verdict that was never coming.

Live Job 38:3 today

  1. When something hits that is far bigger than you, a diagnosis, a layoff, a loss, give yourself one honest hour on the floor, then get up and do the next ordinary thing.
  2. If someone asks you a question you would rather dodge, answer it in your own words instead of repeating what people usually say. Short and true beats smooth.
  3. In a tense meeting or a hard phone call, sit up, feel your feet, and speak at normal volume. Steadiness in the body does half the work.

When something overwhelming arrives, do you tend to collapse, argue, or stand up and answer?
