Job 4:16 Meaning It Stood Still

It stood still, but I couldn’t discern its appearance. A form was before my eyes. Silence, then I heard a voice, saying,

What does Job 4:16 mean?

Something stops. The movement of the ordinary mind pauses, and in that pause a presence stands that no thought can outline.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

Something stops. The movement of the ordinary mind pauses, and in that pause a presence stands that no thought can outline. It has no shape the eyes can seize, because it is not another object in the world of shapes.

Then comes the silence, and out of the silence, a voice. The order of it is something a person can feel for himself. First the endless commentary falls quiet, then something is heard that the noise had always been covering. What is deepest does not shout over the clamor. It waits in the stillness beneath and speaks only once the clamor has died down.

SUFISM

Sufism

A man wakes in the night sure he has seen something, yet he cannot say what stood before him. The danger here is the pride that turns a shiver in the dark into certainty, then builds a hard verdict on it, as this speaker soon will against a suffering friend. The cure is to hold the silence a little longer and confess plainly what has not been made clear.

Still, the form was real and the voice did speak. God comes near in the hush after everything visible fails, and the heart that stops grasping for a picture can finally hear the word that the picture would only have hidden.

AWARENESS

Indian Guru

Silence is not the absence of the voice. It is the condition in which any voice can be heard. While thinking continues there is only thinking, an inner noise so constant it passes for the person himself. Something stands still first, and then what was always speaking becomes audible.

The form cannot be made out because the mind is hunting for a shape it can name and file away, and what appears has no edges to take hold of. Being unable to say what stood there is the mark that something real came, and not a thought dressed up as a revelation.

Live Job 4:16 today

  1. Give yourself three minutes with no screen and no music. Don't try to think anything through, just let the inner talk settle, and see what rises once it does.
  2. In your next real conversation, leave a beat of silence after the other person stops talking. What they say in that extra second is usually the true thing.
  3. Stuck on something at work, step away from the keyboard and stand somewhere plain for a minute. Answers tend to arrive once you stop shouting over them.

What might you hear today if the inside of your head went quiet for a minute?

Tao Te Ching

Muddy water left alone becomes clear. The answer you are reaching for shows up only after you stop reaching.

Zen

The teaching cannot be put into words, so sit until the words run out. What is left when they stop is what you came for.

Upanishads

Beyond the sounds that can be spoken there is a fourth state, soundless. What is most real is reached where speech ends.
