Job 40:15 Meaning See Now

See now, behemoth, which I made as well as you. He eats grass as an ox.

What does Job 40:15 mean?

When the voice from the storm points to the great beast, it points at something inside the man. The creature came from the same maker, shaped when he was, and it carries the raw instinct his tidy mind would rather forget.

PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychoanalysis

When the voice from the storm points to the great beast, it points at something inside the man. The creature came from the same maker, shaped when he was, and it carries the raw instinct his tidy mind would rather forget. For all its size, it feeds quietly on grass, gentle as an ox.

To be shown this animal is to be shown one's own instinctual, bodily nature, the part that was given rather than chosen. A person grows whole not by fearing that animal strength but by admitting it was built into him from the start and owning it.

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

Clinical Psychology

Out of the whirlwind the sufferer is told to look at the great beast, made alongside him, grazing like an ox. The point is scale. Behemoth stands for the raw immensity of created being, a force so far beyond a single man's mastery that merely to face it puts him back in proportion. The one demanding an accounting from God is shown how small his own frame of reference is.

A warning sits underneath the wonder. Do not stand before that immensity and worship your own pride and power in its place. The moment a man makes himself the measure of everything, all hell is bound to break loose. Behemoth eats grass. The creature stays peaceful only so long as no one mistakes himself for its equal.

Live Job 40:15 today

  1. Spend part of today in your body on purpose, walking without headphones, eating a meal with the screen off, feeling hungry or tired without fixing it instantly. Let the animal part of you be a fact, not a problem.
  2. Tell someone close to you one plain thing you want, not the polished version. Appetite spoken out loud stops running the room from behind the curtain.
  3. When anger or desire shows up in traffic or in a meeting, name it inwardly as yours before you decide what to do. The strength is not the enemy, pretending it is not there is.

Which part of my own nature am I still treating as an intruder?

Taoism · Zhuangzi

The ox and the horse are not improved by being bridled and renamed. What was given to a creature by nature is the very thing it lives by.

Hinduism · Bhagavad Gita

Your own nature was built into you, and acting from it imperfectly is better than imitating someone else's. A person cannot step outside the raw material he was made of.

Before enlightenment, chop wood and carry water. After enlightenment, chop wood and carry water. The body and its appetites are not left behind, they are inhabited honestly.
