Job 41:19 Meaning Out of His Mouth Go Burning Torches

Out of his mouth go burning torches. Sparks of fire leap out.

What does Job 41:19 mean?

The old storytellers pictured the forces they could not master as a monster rising from the sea. That monster is the deep part of the mind, the part that moves on its own, under the small waking self that believes it is in charge.

Psychoanalysis

The old storytellers pictured the forces they could not master as a monster rising from the sea. That monster is the deep part of the mind, the part that moves on its own, under the small waking self that believes it is in charge. When something from down there rises up, it does not come quietly.

The fire from its mouth is the raw energy of that hidden life. A man who buries a strong fear or hunger for years will one day feel it break out of him, hot and past his control. The force comes out as fire because the buried thing kept building pressure the whole time, and the everyday mind that tried to hold it down is far too weak to keep it in.

  1. Write down, for yourself only, the thing you have been not-thinking-about for months. Putting it in plain words takes the pressure off the lid without taking the lid off everything at once.
  2. If you snapped at someone recently over something small, go back and say what was really going on underneath. That one sentence drains more pressure than an apology for the volume.
  3. When you feel heat rising in a meeting or a text thread, give yourself ten seconds before answering and ask what has been building. The pause is not politeness, it is the difference between speaking and erupting.

What have I been sitting on long enough that it is starting to leak out sideways?

Anger kept in private does not quiet down, it is fed. What is not dealt with at the start gathers force until it bursts out past any reasoning.

A craving whose root is untouched grows back however often the branches are cut. Only what is seen clearly loses its hold.

Hinduism · Bhagavad Gita

Dwelling on a want breeds desire, desire breeds anger, and anger wrecks the judgment that was supposed to be in charge. The chain runs on its own once it starts.
