Job 42:7 Meaning It Was So

It was so, that after Yahweh had spoken these words to Job, Yahweh said to Eliphaz the Temanite, “My wrath is kindled against you, and against your two friends; for you have not spoken of me the thing that is right, as my servant Job has.

PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychoanalysis

The three friends said all the proper things. They defended a God who was purely good and just, and told Job his pain must be a punishment. Their piety was neat, and it was false, because it left out the dark and frightening side that honest people have always felt.

Job refused to flatter. He faced the whole of God, the terror along with the mercy, and said plainly what he had actually met. This is why the anger lands on the friends and not on him: they told a comfortable lie about God, while Job told the hard truth.

  1. Say the true version of how you are doing, at least to yourself, instead of the version that keeps things pleasant. Being fine on paper is the comfortable lie that keeps you alone in it.
  2. When a friend tells you something awful has happened, resist the tidy explanation about reasons or lessons. Sit with them in it and say the honest thing, that this is hard and you do not know why.
  3. In a meeting or a family dinner where everyone is agreeing to a story you know is not quite true, say your actual view once, plainly and without heat. Then let it stand without arguing it.

Where am I keeping the peace by saying something I do not believe?

The frog in the well explains the whole sky with great confidence, and his account is tidy because his sky is small. The sea turtle who has seen the ocean cannot make it neat.

Judaism · Talmudic tradition

The honest argument with heaven is counted as faithfulness, while flattery is not. Wrestling is permitted, lying about what you have seen is not.
