Job 7:8 Meaning The Eye of Him Who Sees Me

The eye of him who sees me will see me no more. Your eyes will be on me, but I will not be.

What does Job 7:8 mean?

Every form is passing. The body that others see will one day be seen no more, and if you believe you are only this form, it fills you with dread.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

Every form is passing. The body that others see will one day be seen no more, and if you believe you are only this form, it fills you with dread. I am not, you say, and in one sense this is so. The separate self you take yourself to be was never as solid as it seemed.

Yet notice what is aware of this passing. Beneath the changing form there is a presence, a consciousness, looking out through your eyes right now. The person will fade, but that awareness is what you most deeply are, and it does not disappear.

Live Job 7:8 today

  1. Scroll past an old photo of yourself and let it land that the person in it is gone. Then feel who is looking at the picture right now, which has not changed at all.
  2. With someone much older or much younger than you, let their age drop away for a moment. The aliveness looking back at you is the same age as yours.
  3. When you catch yourself anxious about aging, your face, your body, your years left, put your attention behind your eyes instead of in the mirror. Something there is not counting.

What in you has not aged a day?

The same truth in other traditions

Dhammapada

Every form is passing, and gripping a passing form is the root of grief. See it clearly and the fear loosens.

Bhagavad Gita 2

The body is like clothing, taken up and set aside. What wears it is not born and does not die.

Zhuangzi

The dreamer wakes and wonders which one he was. What was aware through both was never either.
