Job 9:2 Meaning Truly I Know That It Is So

Truly I know that it is so, but how can man be just with God?

What does Job 9:2 mean?

When a person stands before God, they face something far larger than their waking self: the image of the whole person, the total self holding all they are, most of it hidden from them. It feels less like facing a judge and more like one wave asked to answer for the sea.

When a person stands before God, they face something far larger than their waking self: the image of the whole person, the total self holding all they are, most of it hidden from them. It feels less like facing a judge and more like one wave asked to answer for the sea.

So a man cannot be declared right before God the way one person is proven right against another. The self that argues its case is only a small part of him, and it can never hold its own against the vast whole it is only a piece of.

Live Job 9:2 today

  1. Pick an argument you won last month and let it go unfinished in your head. Stop rehearsing why you were right and see how much lighter the day gets.
  2. In your next disagreement with someone close, try saying you might be missing something, and mean it. Not as a tactic, just as a fact about how little either of you can see.
  3. Standing in a grocery line or stuck in traffic, remember that every person around you is carrying a whole life you know nothing about. Let that be bigger than your schedule.

Where are you still trying to win a case nobody is hearing?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching

The way is larger than anything that can be said about it. The moment you argue your case against it, you have mistaken a small part for the whole.

Hinduism · Upanishads

The self you defend all day is not the whole of you. The deeper self is vast and mostly unknown to the one who thinks it is in charge.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

He kept reminding himself how small his part was in the whole of nature. Not to shrink himself, but to stop pleading his case against the order he belonged to.
