Joel 2:22 · World English Bible

Joel 2:22 Meaning Don’t Be Afraid

Don’t be afraid, you animals of the field; for the pastures of the wilderness spring up, for the tree bears its fruit. The fig tree and the vine yield their strength.

What does Joel 2:22 mean?

The living world carries no anxiety. The tree does not wonder whether it will bear fruit; when its season comes it simply yields its strength, and the pastures green again without worry.

Ego v. Being

The living world carries no anxiety. The tree does not wonder whether it will bear fruit; when its season comes it simply yields its strength, and the pastures green again without worry. There is an intelligence in life that unfolds each thing in its own time.

Fear belongs to the human mind, which leaves the present to imagine a future of lack that may never come. The same intelligence that opens the pasture and ripens the fig and the vine is the life within you. When you trust it and return to now, fear falls away, because the life that is always providing can only be received now, never in the future where fear lives.

Live Joel 2:22 today

  1. Step outside for five minutes and watch something growing, a tree, grass through the sidewalk, a plant on the sill. It is not worried, and you are made of the same life.
  2. When a group chat starts spiraling about what might happen, be the one who does not add fuel. Say the simple true thing about today and let the thread breathe.
  3. When a deadline or a bill has your stomach tight, bring your attention to this hour and the one task in it. The help you need can only arrive now, never in the imagined future where the fear lives.

What are you afraid will not come, that this moment is already providing?

The same truth in other traditions

Zhuangzi

The tree does not strain to grow and the river does not push itself downhill. Each thing unfolds in its own season, and only people argue with theirs.

Buddhism

Fear is almost always a story about a future that is not here. Come back to this breath and you will find there is nothing in it to be afraid of.

Bhagavad Gita

The same life that moves the seasons moves in you. Trust it and act, instead of trying to carry the whole outcome yourself.
