Joel 2:28 · World English Bible

Joel 2:28 Meaning It Will Happen Afterward

It will happen afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; and your sons and your daughters will prophesy. Your old men will dream dreams. Your young men will see visions.

What does Joel 2:28 mean?

The pouring of spirit upon all flesh is the descent of higher awareness through the whole body, the finer energy saturating every part of a person rather than remaining sealed in the head. Sons and daughters are the active and receptive powers within, the outgoing and inward faculties of one mind, both quickened to speak from a deeper source.

The old men who dream are the settled, matured centers of a person, releasing their wisdom through the imagery of sleep. The young men who see visions are the fresh, ascending energies, their inner sight opened while awareness is still climbing.

What is described is an awakening spread through the entire person: every faculty, seasoned or new, active or receptive, comes alive with a knowing that was not there before.

All flesh: the whole body of a person, every part reached and saturated by descending awareness Sons and daughters: the active and receptive powers within, the outgoing and inward faculties of one mind Old men: the settled, matured inner centers, releasing wisdom through the imagery of dreams Young men: the fresh, ascending energies whose inner sight opens while awareness is still climbing

PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychoanalysis

The deeper mind speaks in two directions, and both are named here. The young, with life ahead of them, see visions that point forward to what they might become. The old, with life behind them, dream dreams that gather up and make sense of what has been lived.

Both are the same source reaching a person through images he did not invent. And this comes 'afterward,' once some old order has broken down. It is often when a person's familiar world falls apart that the inner life opens and begins to speak, offering guidance he could not hear while everything was still comfortable.

AWARENESS

Indian Guru

The sacred was never the property of specialists. Poured on all flesh means the body is included, the daughters as much as the sons, the old as much as the young, and no priest stands in between distributing it in portions.

Something comes first, though. The pouring happens afterward, and what comes before is an emptying: the mind exhausted of its ambitions, the ego no longer occupying the whole space. Then the same energy that drove those ambitions turns into vision in one man and dreaming in another, according to his ripeness, and nothing has been added from outside.

Live Joel 2:28 today

  1. Once today, let what you know arrive through your body instead of your thinking. Feel your feet on the floor in the elevator, your hands under warm water, and let that count as knowing something.
  2. Listen to someone you had quietly filed away as having nothing to teach you, a younger coworker, an older relative on the phone. Wisdom has more doors than the ones you keep watching.
  3. Under stress, before you answer, take one slow breath all the way down past your chest. Let the steadiness start low in you rather than in the argument you are composing.

What part of me have I left out of the knowing, as if only my head were invited?

Zen

Awakening is not a brilliance stored behind the eyes. It shows up in carrying water and chopping wood, in the whole body doing plain things awake.

Sufism · Rumi

The light does not stay in one room of the house. When it comes it reaches the cellar as well as the upper windows, and every part begins to sing.

Upanishads

The self is not lodged in the head alone. It dwells in the breath, the hands, the hearing, present in every part of the living person.
