John 1:8 Meaning He Was Not the Light

He was not the light, but was sent that he might testify about the light.

What does John 1:8 mean?

No person is the source. A teacher, however luminous they appear, is not the light itself but a form through which the light becomes visible to you.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

No person is the source. A teacher, however luminous they appear, is not the light itself but a form through which the light becomes visible to you. The moment you turn the messenger into an idol, you have missed the very thing they came to reveal.

Every true witness points beyond their own form, saying in effect, do not stop at me, look to what shines through me. This is humility in its deepest sense, the knowing that the awareness you point toward is not your private possession. It moves through you, and your whole task is simply to let it be seen, not to claim it as your own.

Live John 1:8 today

  1. When something you said or made gets praised today, let yourself feel it, then quietly admit to yourself where it actually came from. The book you read, the person who taught you, the morning you happened to be rested.
  2. Pass credit on out loud in a group chat or a meeting. Name the person whose idea it really was, even when nobody would have known.
  3. When you are explaining something you know well and you feel the pull to be the impressive one in the room, slow down and make the thing itself clearer instead. The goal is that they see it, not that they see you.

What would change in how you speak today if being understood mattered more than being admired?

The finest leader leaves people saying they did it themselves. The work gets done and no one is left pointing at the one who guided it.

Zen

The teaching is a finger pointing at the moon. Stare at the finger and you will never see the light it was raised for.

The lamp is not the flame. Break your attachment to the glass and you will still have the fire, which was never the lamp's to keep.
